Do I need to prime over drywall repair?
Yes — and we do, every single time. Patches absorb paint differently than surrounding surfaces. If you skip primer, you’ll often see flashing, sheen change, or texture mismatch.

What happens if I paint drywall without primer?
The chances of the patch flashing through the finish in critical light is fairly high. Primer also builds roller stipple.

What is the best primer to hide drywall imperfections? We like to use high build waterborne primers like PPG SealGrip or Benjamin Moore Stix, but they are not substitutes for proper finishing. After priming, we always apply two coats of a high quality ceiling paint. The higher the sheen, the more imperfections will show. This is especially true with bathroom ceiling repairs which often have a semi-gloss or satin sheen.

How many coats of primer on new drywall?
We typically only do one coat of waterborne primer. However if water damage is involved, we prime first with waterborne, and then with oil base primer. After which we apply two coats of paint. Water stains will bleed through waterborne primers, and oil base primers will create a texture on the drywall paper that is hard to get rid of.
